What can you expect in Exposure and Response Prevention

Doing the uncomfortable systematically until it becomes increasingly more manageable…

This is an evidence based-approach to confront fears in a safe and systematic way. If you are struggling with a specific fear, obsessions and compulsions, or panic disorder than I know that the idea of doing this can be scary.

Exposure therapy may involve imaginal and/or in life exposure. We will work together to create a fear hierarchy where we map out a plan for achieving your ultimate goal incrementally, based on your anxiety ratings. For example, if your ultimate goal is to give a presentation at a large conference (which is a ten on your anxiety scale), we may determine to start at imagining yourself attending a large gathering (which is a 4 on your anxiety scale).

The fear hierarchy plan is fluid. I will be your support and guide along the way, but you will ultimately be in charge. Psycho-education is crucial, as well as self-determination of your “why;” why the momentary discomfort is worth it. Maybe it’s to be able to travel again without fear of a panic attack. Maybe it’s to leave the house without having to complete multiple compulsions. Whatever your “why” may be, it will be our fuel.

If you are struggling with a specific fear, OCD, or panic disorder and are interested in Exposure and response prevention, we do not need to begin treatment with this modality until you feel ready. Once your trust is established in me and in this treatment modality, we can then get started. I have seen time and time again through my work that it is worthwhile. I encourage you to consider taking the leap.
